Getting started with Unity 3D for VR design
Full Transcript
hey guys what's up it's still pretty early and I've got a couple of hours before I need to start doing my client work and stuff so I've decided that I'll use this time today to start learning a new skill and learn Unity now if you remember from a couple of videos ago I've told you that I want to start getting into VR design and from the research I did I've discovered that the software called Unity or Unity 3D is probably the best platform or software that I should start learning in order to develop and design for VR so I did a bit of research this morning as to what would be the best way for me to start learning there are some courses at udemy and some courses at treehouse but eventually I came to the conclusion that I should just start with the YouTube tutorials that are available on the unity uh platform so I'm going to grab coffee and going to start learning early in the morning [Music] ring the bking the the [Music] all right so I've been learning for exactly 1 hour and let me show you what I've got so far basically I've created this game here with a ball I haven't finished it yet but what we have so far is that I can use my keyboard here to roll the ball and it's rolling over the surface and it's hitting the wall and it can't proceed any further so this is kind of a uh space for the game where I will later on create some collectible items and so basically it's a very very simple scenario in 3D so far the tutorials basically it's the first one it's like the easiest one for beginners on the unity website um and they are pretty simple but they do require some C coating now I do know a bit of coating so I can understand the concept but it's not simple and there's like tons of functions and stuff that you need to know in order to do that so already I get the sense that you know designing for VR will either take a lot of coding work or that later on I don't know somebody will find a way to simplify those tools but for now I created something pretty it's not simple I mean it does have a lot of complex you know physics into it the ball rolling and the speeds and it falls down and it stops so there is a lot of complexity into it and it was pretty simple to produce but still takes a little coding to do now I don't really want to dig into knowing how to code that much because I still want to focus on design but I'm going to still try to learn this to at least see what I can do by myself that's it for that now I'm going to go back to my normal client work all right it is lunch time and I'm going to grab lunch with my friend [Music] s so I'm eating lunch with Sagi Sagi is my uh yeah we went to design school together and Sagi is doing so many things he's doing podcasting he's got his own hacking UI newsletter and the business that they're starting and he's also starting to Vlog right now hopefully he will continue with that struggling struggling it will get there yeah vlogging is hard I hope s will keep up and continue Ronnie is my idol great great lunch [Music] yeah just want to say that we're doing a webinar next week it's called how to build your personal brand it's made for designers uh so you are welcome to come around you put the link in the Des I'll put the link in the description be sure to check it out s content is super awesome thank you all right I am back home and I've actually finished all of my client work for this afternoon I've become super productive with web flow and I'm really happy because I've got to finish in a couple of hours of Fairly complex ordering product so I'm super happy with that and before I'm heading to their office to show them what I've done I'm going to try to squeeze in like 30 minutes more of trying to progress that Unity project that I've started this morning just to see if you know how far I can push it [Music] today all right so I'm almost finished with this tutorial let me show you what I've completed in like 30 minutes so I've added this rotating animated cubes to the game now I can go around and when I hit them I collect them and they disappear um and that is different from this wall which I can't collide with so now the next step will be to add points when I collect them and so forth so this is done with kind of not very much but some scripting um see I've had to write this code which actually I've kind of copy pasted from uh the examples on the tutorial I do understand what that mean but I don't know if I could write that write that myself and it's very complicated where you have to understand how things Collide and how Unity calculates doing the calculations in the background that's a lot of stuff to understand I'm not sure I really want to dive deep into how everything works but I guess if you want want to create some kind of virtual reality environments and you know there are physics like gravity and animation then you have to understand at least the concepts and how things work so um I do feel like I've uh learned a lot today and I'll head out to my client right now show them what I did [Music] today the good client session show them what I did today and also show them the VR project I worked on kind of brainstorm with them what are like the implication or opportunities for VR that their business might have in the next few years so overall I'm happy obviously I've got like a gazillion more steps in order to do something meaningful with V are but as the cliche says every Journey stop starts with the first step so I'm glad I got to do the first step today and start this journey and hopefully become better at it anyway hope you guys have a great weekend I will catch you next week [Music]
