hey miles Becker here miles Becker calm in this video we're gonna talk about the 80/20 rule and we're gonna go a level deeper we're actually going to apply the 80/20 rule to the 80/20 rule which is called going meta a level now first of all if you're not familiar with the 80/20 rule or the Pareto principle it's an idea that was first kind of come up by a scientist in the late 1800s in France or maybe it was Italy in Europe somewhere and he observed that 80% of the peas from his garden came from 20% of the pea pods he then up started applying that and he found out that 80% of the land in Italy was owned by 20% of the land owners and this principle has been kind of documented and been ruled out across all kinds of different niches and in scientific data points that really go to show that oftentimes we'll find that 20% of our input is creating 80% of our output so that's the Pareto principle right that's the 8020 rule so let's apply the 80/20 rule to the 8020 rule and see what we get and what I mean by this is so we're gonna now take 20% of 20% and that leaves us with 4% and then we apply 80% to 80% and that leaves us with 64% and what we're kind of left with at this kind of meta focusing on the 8020 rule is that 4% of what you do 4% of your efforts generate over 60% of your results which is an amazing relationship right there so one thing my wife and I have habituated over the last few years since we learned this idea is constantly asking ourselves what is my 4% am I currently working on my 4% right now and then organizing our business and building our business and hiring our teammates and outsourcing tasks to allow ourselves the freedom the ability and the time to focus only on our 4% so what is our 4% it's that thing those things which we can only do so you I've kind of said this in a different way before you have something very unique inside of you there's something that you know and can do and can teach in this world that only you know and can teach and can help the world with and this is kind of a combination of how you were raised where you were raised what you were taught as a child with your parents the experiences you had going through college your professional experiences you've had since being in school and it not just college like it doesn't even matter like high school and elementary school even it's all these experiences you've had because you've had a very unique series of a nearly infinite number of experiences that have built you up to be this exact person you are right now and as this person you are now there is something unique about your take on the world or your take on a niche whether it's fitness or love or meditation or making money or financial freedom or living a frugal life you know I don't know you and I don't know what that is so this is where you know garyvee talked a lot about in his new book the askgaryvee show he talks a lot about self-actualization and self-realization and how self-realization is one of the most powerful things for an internet entrepreneur or for any entrepreneur for that matter and it's all about really knowing yourself and knowing what is that inside of you that is ultimately really unique that is your little piece to share with the world and then build systems and figure out ways to get that out so for me I'm kind of like it's in my DNA that I'm a teacher I'm not just a teacher I enjoy speaking the spoken word these videos are my 4 percent right like no one can go be miles Beckler on video other than me it just it doesn't make sense could other people create videos similar to this sure are they gonna have a different approach absolutely are they gonna connect with a different kind of audience absolutely are they going to use the same words and stories and ideas that I use no way are they gonna cover the same videos in the same series in the same way that I do absolutely not so that is my 4 percent then what about like writing the descriptions for the YouTube posts not really my 4 percent what about turning these these posts in the audio track here into a transcription in a text format and then publishing it to my blog not my four percent right I could hire those things out I can get other people to do those jobs with about a 80 90 percent efficiency that I don't need to actually spend a bunch of my time doing that what's important for me to do right here this video this moment with you sharing this idea with you and this is something that I can only do because I've got this unique series of experiences and I've read a very unique compilation of hundreds of books at this point and I've gone through so many training courses and that's what I'm passionate about sharing and it took me years to figure this out so now I've been building my team bringing on new teammates to help me get these ideas out through my blog through social media through Pinterest and pins etc without me actually doing that work right I'm just doing my 4 percent which is this video and then I set up a system and I put people in place to make sure that I get the maximum amount of reach from these efforts and the same as the the same is true for my wife's business we start with an audio track in her business we've been recording these audio meditations for years and those audio meditations now are in books they're in print books they're in Kindle books they're in apps on the iOS store they're on the Google Play Store they're on the Amazon App Store if anybody actually uses that they're in blog content on WordPress they're turned into Facebook posts they're turned into Pinterest posts they're turned into tweets on Twitter they're there I mean they're all over right we maximize we put him on SoundCloud like we maximize the reach of every single one but my wife's not doing all of that right like she's just creating that audio file that unique thing that she does it's her voice it's her personality it's her energy on the audio track that's what people love and we built a team and systems around that to make sure that once that's done all kinds of other value can be had from that same effort she puts out right maximizing that value so she puts out that four percent that creates that 64 percent of results and then we've got teammates in place that do that other 16 percent that make up to the 80 plus percent of our results and that's really the focus another analogy really quickly before we wrap this up is you know I like to look at our business and our processes and our procedures as like a row of dominoes right and ultimately when all those dominoes fall you know you set up a row of dominoes when your kid and you flick over the first one and they all kind of knock each other over that's kind of the analogy we're going with and so we're stacking up all these dominoes which is a blog post a social media update on Facebook a Pinterest pin on Pinterest and all of those different areas that our content goes into whether it's a book or an app or a free content on the blog all of those are individual dominoes right and they're all lined up in a line but all I want my wife to do and all I'm doing with this video here is I'm just flicking over that first one click I get this first one which is the video and then my team and my procedures and my my processes are in place so that once I kick this over and upload it and put it into a certain spot on my project management system the other people are notified the other teammates who take the next steps they're notified they know what to do they take their step they send it down the line to the next person they send it down the line to the next person so it can go from an audio file to a transcription to an editor to a editor to a publisher to a social media manager and by the time it's done it might take weeks sometimes and ultimately we've got that content going out through several multiple different channels to maximize the reach out of each one we put in our 4% we stay focused on doing what only we can do and then we send it out through our processes and our team to make sure we're getting the maximum reach and value out of everything we do so a little bit of story there but now if you can kind of translate this and bring it back into you your situation your world your life in your business what is it that you know and what is it that you do that only you can do and use that as that first domino and start to think okay so I do this every day and what else needs to happen if you're naturally a writer great right right just just do the writing and get it on your WordPress plug we're press post and if you don't know how to build the WordPress awesome so you need a tech person to lay that out if you don't know how to make the social media graphics awesome you need someone on graph who can sort that out for you you just write write write write write and publish every day do a 90 day publishing challenge and ultimately you don't just get that one blog post out of it but it goes out in all kinds of directions you can even find somebody who could speak out your article turn it into a YouTube video for you and all of those things can be automated through kind of a series of procedures and through a project management system and that's your goal so finally if you're thinking but but I don't know what my my thing is I don't know enough about myself that's okay and what you need to do at this point is you need to skill up you need to come up with one new skill that you're excited to take on one new skill that interests you and matches with your your DNA if you will so for me making these videos is kind of one of the things that I took on and I challenged myself with a few months ago and I've been going with it and if you've been back to the the first ones in the channel like those videos are pretty bad right I didn't really get where I was going I just knew I had to do it and sometimes it's like turning on a hose that's been sitting there right the first water that runs out of the garden hose it's gonna be dirty and nasty but if you keep flowing water through that hose it will get crystal-clear you will be making great points you will be kind of coming out of your shell and stepping into it so if you need to figure out what your thing is skill up learn WordPress learn marketing funnels learn pay-per-click learn how to write great for the web learn how to create video learn how to do podcasting any of those are a brilliant way to scale up and to make an impact and to build an audience in this world and you don't do all of them you just pick one that sounds like the most fun so you'll follow through and really really nail that get going on that get your message out I know it feels awkward I know we want to just record the videos and kind of like save them on our hard drive until the timings right the timings never right start publishing them just put them out they'll get better and better and better and it's the consistent action over time that makes all the results so you focus on your 4% do only that which you can do and keep doing that over and over and over and over and when you have time in between figure out how to hire and outsource people who can help you fill the gaps to get the maximum reach out of what you're doing and trust me you set this kind of a system up you get to do the fun part that's an alignment with your DNA your message is getting out you will build an audience then you have teammates who expand your reach and that will simply grow your audience and at that point you have a platform going and then you can sell books you can sell products you can build an email list you can recommend affiliate products all of those other ancillary things that can create revenue for you show up once you've habituated the process of getting what is ultimately that which only you can do out because you my friend have a very special If you are familiar with the 80/20 rule, or the Pareto principle, and you don't know what your 4% is, you are missing the point.
Everyone knows what the 80/20 rule is, but very few people understand how to maiximize this ratio to create the most positive output and benefit in their lives or businesses because the Pareto principle is incomplete.
You see, if you apply the 80/20 rule to the 80/20 rule, you end up with two numbers.
4% (20% of 20%) and 64% (80% of 80%)... and these are the most important numbers in your business.
Why?
Because if you stay focused on doing the 4% of things that only you can do... You will create 64% of the effectiveness needed to be successful with your business.
You then outsource the rest, or build systems and automation in order to maximize your output, keeping yourself focused on the most important tasks (your 4%).
My wife and I are always asking ourselves and each other... "Is this your 4%?"
...Meaning. Is this something that ONLY you can do?
So often we find ourselves doing things that any of our developers, designers or VA's can do, so we need to remind ourselves to do those things that only we can do.
This is how we keep the first thing first and stay focused on the most important tasks at all times.
