The first in our Trinity term R:ETRO webinars - Reputation: Ethics, Trust, and Relationships at Oxford, hosted by Intesa Sanpaolo Research Fellow Rita Mota, Professor Alan Morrison, and the Oxford University Centre for Corporate Reputation at Oxford Saïd. Itziar Castello, Associate Professor in Digital Economy at Surrey Business School, discussed 'Shaping the new sustainability agenda through online deliberation in COVID times'.
Abstract:
A predominant assumption when looking at stakeholder engagement in social media is that emotions mainly polarise discourses, hindering deliberative quality and making impossible the developing of new sustainability agendas. Challenging this assumption, we show the importance of understanding the constructive role of emotions in stakeholder engagement, specially when communications online are the only form of engagement. Through the analysis of the social media discourses of civil society and corporations on the problem of plastic pollution, we show how they engage in what we call emotional constructive dissent through three main key activities: problem recognition; construction of the arguments; and consolidation of arguments. We observe that emotions allow inclusive contestation, which involves creating an emotional collective connection while pushing for moral arguments. Our research contributes to the understanding of the dynamics of strategic dissent in deliberative processes and the emotional dynamics of stakeholder engagement. It also has implications for the development of new sustainability agendas in the light of the COVID pandemic.
