Key Takeaways
The video discusses VTP troubleshooting for the CCNA 200-125 exam, focusing on issues with VLAN database synchronization and VTP password configuration.
Full Transcript
[Music] this is one of multiple videos discussing issues with a V TP or VLAN trunking protocol in this topology we've been told that when VLANs are added to the VLAN database they are not synchronized with other switches so let's test that on switch to show VLAN briefed we have some VLANs in the VLAN database will create a new VLAN let's say VLAN 11 before we hit enter let's check the VLANs on the other switches so switch 3 doesn't have VLAN 11 in the VLAN database and neither does switch 1 so I'll create VLAN 11 chauvelin brief shows us that VLAN 11 is in the database of switch to what about such one it's not our there and it's not in the VLAN database of switch 3 show interface trunk have we got trunks configured yes we do gigabit to 0 0 is trunking to switch to show VTP status let's compare that to switch to scishow VTP status okay can you see the problem what's the problem here notice the domain name is set to CCNA on both switches but on the switch it's in lower case and on the switch it's in upper case you need to set your domain name - the same name and it's case sensitive so we get a message telling us that the domain name has changed show VTP status domain name is now CCNA show the VLAN brief vielen 11 appears in the VLAN database so let's create another VLAN here let's say VLAN 12 show VLAN VLAN 12 appears on switch to it's creatively land 13 robber chauvelin brief VLAN 30 now appears here and there's the last test VLAN 14 now appears here so the VLAN databases of switch 2 and switch 3 are synchronizing don't forget that too the domain names are case sensitive what about such one it's still not learning the VLANs through VTP show interface trunk that all looks good we've got a trunk established all VLANs are allowed none of them are currently pruned ok so show VTP status let's compare that to switch - this is the same this is the same domain is the same they both servers so it all looks good the one thing to be aware of is the password they should be the same now notice this md5 hash it's different to this md5 hash so it looks like there's a problem with the password configured in VTP now as a quick aside in the exam you may not have access to all available commands as an example you could simply use the command show VTP password to see what the password is currently configured as on a switch and it shows you that in clear-text on this switch as an example we could use the command show VTP password and we can see that no password is configured on the switch no password is configured so just because the command is available on a real device doesn't mean that you'll have access to it in the exam so we're going to continue assuming that you can't type a this command the only one available to you or the output that you have in a question is show VTP status so let's continue troubleshooting VT P so let's verify that passwords on either side so so I'll use the command V DB password and put in a password of Cisco we told that it's already set to Cisco so password is definitely being configured on that switch VT P password Cisco here the password was set to Cisco so on the side show VT P status we've got ten VLANs now show VLAN briefed still not seeing another VLAN let's try creating an additional vielen vielen 14 after a while once synchronization has taken place we see the VLANs in the VLAN database VTP status we told here that there's a mismatch on gigabyte a zero one so we know that there's going to be a problem to switch three so while we here let's change the VDP password notice we did get a message telling us that there was a mismatch on the message digest so we told that there's a VT P protocol problem so that's good to look out for when troubleshooting password issues in VT P show VTP status we need this to update but what I'd like to point out is notice the hash is the same the switches so the numbers are the same hence we know that the password is the same on the switches so as an example if I create a VLAN 20 what should happen is we see VLAN 20 on switch one and we do if I create a VLAN 21 on switch one that should appear on switch to which it does and while I'm here notice the message has disappeared about a md5 mismatch so that means that on switch 3 which previously was showing this message we don't see the message and we should see the VLANs in the VLAN database so there we go so as a last test will create a VLAN 22 on switch three that should appear on switch 2 and it does and it should appear on switch 1 which it does so with md5 passwords check your hashes they need to be the same when a password is configured okay so in this video I showed you how to troubleshoot VTP issues we looked at an issue with the domain name remember it's case sensitive and we look to add a VTP passwords the same password needs to be used by devices in the VTP domain if there are two supplies with one another [Music]
