JupyterHub Satellites: Running Dashboards/IDE Servers in JupyterHub - K. Taletskiy & C. Holdgraf
JupyterHub Satellites: Running Dashboards/IDE Servers in JupyterHub - Konstantin Taletskiy, Orange Bricks & Chris Holdgraf, 2i2c
Running different IDEs (VSCode, RStudio, Pluto, marimo), dashboards (Streamlit, Shiny, Dash, Voila) and web apps alongside notebooks within JupyterHub is increasingly common, yet configuring these "satellite" apps can be challenging. Despite growing adoption, this use case is still under‑documented in the official JupyterHub documentation. The recent addition of standalone‑proxy support to jupyter‑server‑proxy establishes a common standard, making 2025 an ideal moment to coalesce community knowledge and promote this workflow more broadly. This session brings together Jupyter maintainers, JupyterHub deployers and infrastructure teams to exchange experiences, identify pain points, and discuss best practices. Through facilitated breakout discussions, participants will collaboratively map common use-cases, evaluate security implications, and explore usability improvements. Attendees will leave with practical insights, clearer guidance for choosing proxy tools, and connections for continued collaboration.
