[Music] during a big technology that's been emerging in recent years is docker so in genus 3 we now support docker containers could you explain kind of what this is about versus running let's say a VM or something and why is it cool to have that in Janissary so first doggy our containers are much more lightweight slam VMs yep so you can add lots of docker containers to your n3 projects yeah and it's also much faster yep and what I really like about it outside this is when you drag a docker container into your workspace it connects automatically to internet yes I suggest we pour the doc your image from the internet and install it for you yeah and it's when you saw you when you drag and drop the document owner into your project it will work like you don't have to install anything configure anything it just you just start the doctor container usually boots up in just a few seconds and it's ready to use now 2.2 great new feature I've heard a lot of complaints about this big issue with docker containers you turn it off you shut down gns3 you open it up again everything that you've installed is gone yes it's not the best isn't persistency so now we have persistency in in gns3 persistent if I can spell that persistent yeah constable today so we have persistent containers terrico persistency of docker containers in Janissary 2.2 yes I'll add another video either below I'll link it below this or it'll be further in the course depending where you're watching this showing you how to make docker containers persistent I think that's a huge advantage because I had a lot of complaints on my Python courses we were used in a boon to docker container and then they would install Python and when they come back tomorrow yes so the the nerd stands alone again Oh where's my Python program but now you buy simply it's a simple edit you just add like the the folders that you want to keep your assistant and then it remains yeah it remains so what's the advantage of using a VM over doc or would you recommend doctor always if you just need a few tools like linux shell with some tools like paying traceroute Xterra i will go with the care and if you want like windows in the system or any other advanced system you just run it in a in the VM it's if you want a full operating system yeah if you want the GUI like the GUI yes like you run it in a VM the yeah you don't get a docker windows no no there's no doctor in the to get a Linux doc yeah yes I mean doc is more for Linux these days yeah anyway so if you want like a simple console no Gino GUI mm and you want to run Python scripts and that's the way to go yeah that's a way to good okay is much more lightweight but if you want to run it write a Python application with a fancy graphical user interface and you get a VM use a VM and the problem the VM is it's very resource intensive yes so you cannot like have an resin a VM in your gen 3 project on your on your computer but you could with us you could weave the Carius very lightweight yeah great any other comments about docker and BM no no everything that's brilliant Jeremy Shalini I she'd this question if I wanted to host a Windows VM or something that's part of my genius tree topology how would I do that you can either use VMware or of your toolbox yeah so you got two options here yes you create your new VM in VMware use our windows in it within it and then you can import that VM in Engine 3 in your journey through project and use it like so what's the advantage of one of these I mean I suppose the one thing I can think of if you running genus the genus 3vm envy my hoo-hoo you can't start up a whole bunch of VirtualBox VM because it'll crash the CPU or something Sara yes is a conflict between VMware and the Starbucks it's like we around Nestle via transition support you cannot activate Nesta to it via traditional support from both product at the same time yes so in other words this is something that I've come across you know I'm running on a Mac Genius Rima Mac and I'm using VMware fusion so I have to do my Windows VMs VMware fusion yes because otherwise it's gonna crash yeah so even you're running a junus tree VM in VMware you have to use VMware VMs who if you using VirtualBox and you use VirtualBox VM yes usually it's a good idea to be consistent yeah so if you have if you're using VirtualBox VMs in your projects and you're only running the j-3 vm in theater box it's the best - to use both products wrong sorry we've got a another member of the team on our time yeah mark Blackwell himself can you just flip that back mark so we can see ourselves okay so the M way if you be consistent with VMware yes VirtualBox be consistent work yeah exactly so you sure endogenous Trivium with VMware please use gen 3 VMs in your projects and the same applies to your third books okay now what about this because I know you can run Windows VMs on cume you you can but it's going to be extremely slow of the experience not going to be great so that's why we recommend VMware of your Tradeworks okay so this option is basically where you've got the genius 3 p.m. and then you're running cume you in genus 3 so actually cumulants guess and then you're running Windows inside Q inside Linux within the genus 3 VM running within a virtualization technology like VMware yeah so your nesting nesting nesting yes and is going to be very slow so then you would recommend these two options VMware official box for your Windows host or micro s our store yeah I mean and that's been my experience I did Kelly Linux and try to do it this way even with let's just Linux yep and it's a bit slow so it seems to be easier sometimes if you've got big devices or devices that are going to be process intensive to use it this way yeah that's great I mean would you recommend one of the other or is it just depending what you're using VM with I usually prefer to use VMware because they have a better product yeah things is they are slightly faster than theater books but gesture box would be totally fine to use and it's free that's that's one of the big advantage yeah that's great so Jeremy thanks very much for sharing about the different appliances if I've missed any or if there's any that you have questions about let me know and I'll create some videos about that Jeremy thanks very much [Music]

Original Description

Why would you use Docker containers rather than Virtual Machines (VMs) in GNS3? Which is best? And which hypervisor should you use? VMware or VirtualBox? What about QEMU? Jeremy (creator of GNS3) shares his advice on what you should be using. Docker Persistent containers: https://youtu.be/K-iAD8B5noM #gns3 #docker #vmware
