Explains relational and NoSQL databases on Google Cloud
Full Transcript
The main difference between relational and non-reational databases is how data is stored and organized. Relational databases store and provide access to data in tables that are joined by relationships. This includes built-in mechanisms to ensure the consistency and integrity of your database structure. You can think of relational databases as a well organized library. All your data is neatly categorized into tables like books on shelves and you can easily find what you need using SQL which is like the libraries catalog. Google Cloud relational database offerings include Cloud SQL, Alloy DB and Spanner. Spanner is a fun one because while it's technically a relational database, some features behave like NoSQL databases. In contrast to relational databases, non- relational NoSQL databases typically store data in a single table with keys and values or in a document format such as JSON. This makes them ideal for data types that change frequently or for applications that handle diverse types of schema. These databases prioritize flexibility over built-in data integrity enforcement, which means your application might need to handle the task of ensuring data consistency. NoSQL databases are like a bustling marketplace. They're flexible and dynamic, perfect for handling all kinds of data schemas like customer reviews, social media posts, and even sensor readings from IoT devices. They can also provide high throughput and lower latency based on their looser restrictions on consistency. NoSQL databases include fire store, big table, and memory store. If you need strong consistency and storage efficiency, a relational database like cloud SQL or alloy DB might be the right choice. If you're prioritizing scalability and flexibility, a NoSQL database like Fire Store or Bigtable could be a better fit. Or perhaps you're working with large language models and need the most upto-date data possible. All Google databases support vector embeddings, but Alloy DB goes a step further by supporting the fastest indexes and natural language support. Vector enabled databases like Alloy DB can embed the semantic meaning in unstructured data and store them as vectors enabling highquality semantic search from directly within the database. Ultimately the choice between relational and NoSQL databases depends on the data structure and requirements of your application.
