think for a moment about a leader who brought out the best in you somebody made you feel alive and excited what did he or she typically do what did they say how did they make you and other people around them feel I'm Richard boyatzis a professor in organizational behavior psychology and cognitive science here at Case Western Reserve University we experience leadership all the time from our parents when we were young to teachers to managers to friends and yet leadership remains elusive and often a mystery in this course we're going to look at leadership as a relationship as an emotional bond built upon emotional intelligence through hope compassion mindfulness and playfulness we'll explore stories like mrs. Anna mooses Akali who transformed four trees into a vibrant primary school in kwazulu-natal South Africa we'll look at how Ramona and Valentine Jaeger Stara used their emotional intelligence to revitalize the fifth generation family business to produce one of Spain's greatest wines we'll look at how Apple surpassed Sony and others in creating an emotional relationship with you the customer and made you want to buy products that you didn't even know you needed or wanted but mostly we're going to talk about how you nurture and inspire learning and change in yourself and others you will learn you'll learn the latest in research in theory that we at Case Western Reserve University and others have been doing in fields of management psychology education and medicine and you'll learn skills in a sense this is a reality TV show and you're the star but fret not you won't be voted off the island and this is not the weakest link but be prepared this is not your typical course yes you will learn about leadership and emotional intelligence and resonance and renewal but mostly this is about you in your future I hope to see you in class
