[Music] hi I'm thus Hogarth I'm a recording artist in the R&B Blues tradition I'm also a member of The Faculty here at Berkeley College of Music and Boston where I've been for starting my 12th year right now I'm also a member of The Faculty of the Berkeley music online continuing education division of Berkeley College of Music where I've authored a pretty popular course called Funk Rock R&B soloing I'm here to talk to you today about a new course that I'm authoring and uh this is the kind of course that many of you out there are thinking of picking up guitar and uh starting to play and whether you play acoustic guitar or electric guitar we're going to start off with the basics we'll teach you the names of the parts of the instrument names of the strings will teach you how to tune a guitar and I know you can use a tuna we'll teach you that too we'll talk about finger Style versus using a pick we'll teach you some technique exercises as far as holding the instrument I mean you certainly do want to uh hold it in the correct way to prevent any kind of injury we'll talk about string gauge you know what are the advantages to using a thick string versus a thin string and then after we have that basic fundamental knowledge we're going to move on to some music we're going to teach you the ABCs of Music Harmony and Theory we won't get too complicated but we're going to teach you why a major scale sounds like a major scale many of you have heard do R mi fa so la T do what is that and how does that relate to music we're going to give you a little bit of context for that and then after you've learned that maybe a couple of other scales like the chromatic scale and how that plays into western music and the 12 tones of Music really simple stuff fundamental though and and with this knowledge we're going to start building chords now you might ask what is a chord we're going to talk about why chords sound the way that they do and what notes make up the chords from the major scale for example um and then we're going to start with this knowledge we're going to start playing some [Music] music we're playing basic Triad chords so we're going to talk about the construction of Triad chords and for those of you who've chosen electric guitar as your instrument we'll touch on essential effects such as Overdrive [Music] and [Music] Wawa we're not only going to give you the information but we also give you the application and the context for that information too so whether you're thinking about playing acoustic guitar or electric guitar this course will give you the fundamentals that you need to get you playing and keep you playing [Music]
