hello my name is Ken Hale I'm a faculty member and assistant dean at the College of Pharmacy at Ohio State University I am also a pharmacist and I have taught pharmacy students for more than thirty years it will be my great pleasure to share my excitement about the introduction to pharmacy course with you we live in a drug taking society fueled by easy access to medical information great advances in drug discovery and development and our own high expectations regarding health this phenomenon is both good and bad for after all we are living longer in healthier lives because of these medications and diseases that were once fatal are more and more becoming chronic conditions or even being cured the pharmaceuticals ation of our society has a dark side as well in terms of adverse drug events and the misuse and abuse of prescription drugs and pharmacy is obviously central to this scenario the role of the pharmacist has changed in very substantive ways to accommodate the medication needs of patients in this course we will examine pharmacies beginnings we will look at the progression of Pharmacy through history we'll explore contemporary issues in the field and projections for the future along the way we will learn how this field is regulated through legal parameters and ethical expectations educational and career pathways the interesting world of drug discovery and development and critical issues surrounding the drug use process and importantly we will come to understand the pharmacists contemporary role and medication therapy management I have enjoyed a wonderful career in pharmacy and look forward to exploring this profession with the students in our course I hope that you will join us on this educational journey
