hello my friends how are you doing today i'm gonna show you how to slice fruit in affinity photo because as you can see here this has been done digitally my name is olivio i'm a professional designer sharing my industry knowledge with you so maybe subscribe to my channel for free let's get started by removing everything here and just maybe keep the background so let's go like this and now what we have here if you look at that is we have an orange here let's turn the background off for a second and then we have this we have the middle of orange just sliced orange and removing the background you can see in other of my videos i'm going to start here at that step we also have two different water splashes that we are going to put in here and the background is a simple rectangle that has a gradient on it and i simply pick these two colors from the orange so i get a dark orange and a bright orange like a yellowy orange and you can see that this is set to the type elliptical and so i just drag this out to have a little bit of a orangey uh vignette around it to have more of a center focus all right so how do we slice the orange exactly well you can do that any way you want because the good thing about it is if you have a sphere if you have a round object you can't visually see in what direction it is pointing it's it's round right so you can slice it any way you want so let's just do that i will take my freehand selection tool over here and let's hold shift and then click click click click click so now we have a nice slice okay so with my orange layer here selected i'm gonna go ctrl c like caesar and ctrl v like venus to make the first copy then i'm clicking back on the full orange and i'm going to select and then invert pixel selection the reason why i do this is because now i want to copy the other side of the orange you can of course slice it any way you want you don't have to have equal halves of it all right so let's go the same uh ctrl c like caesar ctrl v like venus and you can see now we have two parts of our orange let's go like this you can see i can move this apart and there we go we have our two parts now how do we get this slice on here well this is actually pretty easy first of all i will hold my ctrl key and then click and drag so i make a copy of that and then the next step i'm going to do well i will rotate this a little bit so it's already kind of in the right direction and then i'm going down here where it says perspective tool like so click on that and then you simply move this down here until you're satisfied with that now there is one important thing you need to look out for and that is the edge of the orange or not the edge it's round it doesn't have an edge i mean uh the outer part of the orange because as you can see if i stretch this this part here the skin part becomes very thick becomes very wide we don't want that we want it to be um like looking naturally so you have to look for that when you move your points around on the outside of the orange that this is not happening in a too extreme way so it still looks natural and you can see if you move this here you can actually zoom in here so you put this on the edge so that's important also over here this has to be moved a little bit in maybe a little bit um like so we can still hide this we can still clean this up a little bit more but that looks pretty good like so okay that's good and you can see this looks like it is slicing that way because there's a sphere you don't know what kind of direction you're looking at it you can cut it in any kind of way right of course you have this little stem here so it wouldn't make much sense if then the inside would look like this because we know that this white part goes from the stem to the other side of the stem so you have to have a slice that visually like logically fits the inside of the fruit all right so now we are going to do the same thing over here rotate this a little bit click on our perspective tool and then move this into taste whatever feels good to us wherever we want to put that so we are satisfied like i said it's a sphere so um it looks good from most directions that's pretty helpful with this there we go let's move this up here a little bit um that looks pretty okay we can move this in tiny bit doesn't work okay let's click on apply i think we are good there we go that looks perfect okay great so we now have two slices here and um what we want to do next is to create a little bit of shadow here a little light situation so it looks more 3d it looks more alive so for that we're going to create an ellipse over here and then stretch it out like this and then move it so we cover up that part of the orange like so that's pretty important to do that and the next part that we need to do here is to uh localize that part of our orange you can see here that slice part and we want to right click and duplicate this why do we do that because we need to use that as a mask so we move this up here over our ellipse over our ellipse let's turn the ellipse on again you can see now here's the white part and this is our orange slice now on the layer tab right click and then say mask to below and now this will cover exactly the area where our orange slice is right okay so what we're going to do with that is that we are going to create a gradient so click and drag the gradient in here so this is just our starting point the next thing we're going to do is up here you have the gradient fill in here so you want to click on that and then create both sides as black so you want to click on this point here and then click down here where it says color and then just make this side here black right good so now one side should be opacity zero like so so we have a gradient in here that goes uh transparent and the reason why we make it black on both sides is because if i would make it white on one side and black on the other side it would be gray in the middle before it fades and that would not work for us right okay so the next thing we need to do is to select the type elliptical and this gives us this arm here we can see right now that the black is on the wrong end because this should be our center and the center should be black you don't have to switch this around and go through all the steps you just click here gradient reverse like so easy peasy not much work all right so now that we have set this up we can stretch this out here a little bit and then we can just reduce the opacity and you can see that this now simply creates for us a light situation let's move this here in a little bit again this is why we have the gradient inside of a shape inside of an ellipse because then we can move it around and you can see that now we have a little bit of a different light situation where this side is darker this side is brighter and that helps us to make the illusion more real right okay so we are going to do the same thing on the other slice down here so we can duplicate this one right click and then duplicate so that's a good starting point and then what we're actually going to do is to just reuse this one so you can right click and then duplicate this one and then move it down here and then move it over here and you want to turn this upside down so it goes the other way let's zoom in here a little bit so you can better see what i'm doing i have a little bit of problems with the mouse wheel today sorry for that there we go so now we can stretch this out a little bit like so that already looks pretty good now what we need to do is we have to have another mask we have to have this cut as a mask so we will select this mask that we have in here you can see it has this little sign on it so this identifies it as a mask and then just click down here on the trash bucket to remove that and then move this layer over it like so right click and then mask to below you can see mask 2 below so now this has happened and now what we can do is first of all we can play around with the opacity to see where this brings us and we can also play around with our uh gradient so that's great so you can see here i can make this stronger i can make this uh smaller and bigger and by that also make this gradient stronger or weaker so maybe let's keep it like this move this a little bit outside you can even move it outside so it's pretty awesome and then maybe reduce it a little bit and yeah that looks pretty good i would say that looks awesome so we are basically almost done let's turn on the background this already looks pretty fresh now what we want to do here to make our life a little bit easier is to group these layers here as you can see this is our lower orange so select all of them by clicking on the upper one and then holding shift and clicking on the lower one of this three layer set basically and then on the keyboard press ctrl and g like goal there we go or like group that makes more sense in that case right all right so this is our first group now the upper orange is here i will move this up a little bit and then we have this shadow area here i will move this down a little bit so they are really close to each other again select the upper one hold shift select the lower one so all three are selected now and now ctrl g like group and we have created a group i can even rotate that now if i want to into another direction so that's pretty cool i can be more playful with that if i want to all right so next step we have our water here so this has some blue in it i don't want that the way to fix that is pretty easy click on adjustment and hsl and you can desaturate that now before we do that here's a little trick i want to do this for both of our water splashes so i'm simply going to put both of them into a group like so and then i'm going to put the hsl adjustment also in the group on top of the other layers in the group like so and now if i desaturate this you can see that this simply turned now uh black and white or in this case gray okay cool so now with the group we are going to play around a little bit with our um with our blend modes and see which kind of blend mode is giving us the best result in this kind of situation actually i feel like this is not too bad to have a to have a yellow water splash in here has more of an orange shoe so let's do that why not good so we can now select the individual water splashes and of course we want to move them behind our oranges like so so we have one here let's move this orange a little bit more down here and then this water splash down like so make it a little bit bigger maybe that looks pretty good it's a little bit soft it's not as strong as i want it to be so i'm simply going to duplicate this and you can see this is going to make the effect stronger let's duplicate it again and then maybe reduce the opacity over here a little bit so it's not going to be too much and then on the other side we're basically going to do the same thing um well let's move this maybe like so that looks pretty cool and then we want to select that water splash like so that's pretty nice maybe should we make it a little bit bigger let's try that yeah why not that looks pretty good okay again uh duplicate that and that's already pretty good let's reduce that a little bit so that's pretty okay good now here comes the trick with the font because we are almost done here we want to add a cool font to everything so what i'm going to do is to click and drag to give me some size and then i'm going to write the the text fresh and choosy there we go a little bit too big sorry for that let's move this back here okay so here's the thing that i'm doing i am making this font a little bit bigger like so well that's maybe a little bit too big let's make it like this okay good i will right click and duplicate that and then turn on turn off the visibility of one of them and then right click and rasterize the other one now why am i rasterizing this here is why i will now rotate this to the side and then squish it a little bit and pull it a little bit so it's getting bigger on the ends and now look at that i'm going to use my mesh warp tool and it's using the frame of this so this is why i first rasterized it and then rotated it because now we have this outer box that is following the text and now i'm just going to bend this in and you can see how we can create a nice squishy text in the middle between our oranges without any problems super easy and now i can simply add a shadow here outer shadow let's go like this give it a little bit more distance and maybe reduce the opacity a little bit and there you go super easy we have fulfilled our task to make a cool picture of sliced oranges i hope you enjoyed that tutorial subscribe to my channel for free if you did maybe share the video maybe join my facebook group see you soon bye hey
