analysis the best tools to perform content gap analysis and how to do it for free the idea of gap analysis is to compare the gap between where a company currently is and where it wants to be so content gap analysis is used to identify gaps within your existing content to help you hit your traffic and search positioning targets this could be either gaps in content topics that you're yet to cover or quality gaps in either your competitors or your own content that you could plug your findings from this process will drive you to either update your existing contents or create brand new same for your competitors content ranking for the same keyword and export those keywords now paste your keywords under the your keywords column and your competitors keywords under the competitors keywords column immediately you will see some competitor keywords highlighted as green those are your content gaps the keywords your competitors are ranking for that you are not our template is super basic there are a million and one ways for you to improve it make it more powerful and customize it to support your specific research for example you could add a ranking column right next to the volume column right now we know that a competitor is ranking for a keyword but we have no idea what position they are in so this could be beneficial data for you to analyze now i've shown you how to do a basic content gap analysis i want to take you through how to use ahrefs tool built specifically for this research you'll find the content gap analysis tool within their site explorer we're going to take an example from the search results for comfiest beanbags and use greatbeanbags.com say we want to discover what are the keywords competitors that are already ranking for this search term also rank for so we'll enter our domain in the site explorer and click the content gap report from the menu on the left add the articles you are competing against in this example i just chose to and you'll be faced with a list of all the keywords each competitor ranks for that you don't and their ranking position another tip to better your results is to set the intersection setting to one target this will show unique keywords that one competing site ranks for but the others don't it's how you can find often easy opportunities for you to target with your contents i mentioned earlier that you can also use content gap analysis to improve existing content by identifying gaps in the actual content itself for example if you have an existing article about a topic with a high search volume that isn't performing as well as it could you can use this analysis to identify gaps in the article that need to be improved to do this we'd want to look at the contents that's already ranking well in google let's go back to our best exercise bikes example we'll enter this into google search scroll down to the organic results and open the top ranking posts to check for thoroughness how in depth does the content go into each point subtitles are there any subtopics within the article that you've missed in your own media how many images have they included are there unique photos taken by the
