How to insert a new line in a cell (or formula) in Google Sheets

in this video i'm going to show you how to enter a new line within a cell in google sheets so sometimes you'll want to enter text into a cell and you'll want to enter text on multiple lines within the same cell and there's a very easy way of doing this and all you have to do is hold ctrl and enter on the keyboard to go to a new line while you're still editing the same cell so let's say that i wanted to type a task list into cell a2 so i'm going to type ask 1 then i'm going to hold ctrl on the keyboard and press enter and as you can see my cursor has moved to a new line but i'm still editing the same cell and then i would type task 2 then i would keep repeating this again pressing ctrl plus enter each time that you want to go to a new line now i'm going to press enter and as you can see i have text that is entered on multiple lines within the same cell and also you'll see that the text entered into the formula bar looks the same now you can also use this same method to enter a new line when you're using formulas in google sheets when you enter formulas on multiple lines this doesn't change the functionality of the formula but it organizes the formula visually to make it easier to see different portions of the formula so for example i'm going to enter an if function in cell a2 i'm going to type equals if parentheses now i want the rest of the formula to be on a new line and so i'm going to hold ctrl and then press enter on the keyboard and just like in the last example my cursor has moved onto a new line and now i'm going to enter the rest of the formula and then press enter and as you can see this formula is operating just like it normally would if it were entered on a single line but since we press ctrl plus enter to put it on a new line it simply organizes the formula visually for us and so here we have equals if to begin our function and then the rest of the function is on the second line now this is just a simple example i usually wouldn't do this unless i had a very big formula but this comes in very handy when you have long formulas or multiple formulas nested within each other now if you want i've linked the article for this video below and there's a lot more ways that i'll go over in the article as to how you can add new lines within a cell by using formulas and i'm not going to go over that here because it would make the video very long but the main way to add a new line within a cell in google sheets is to simply press control plus enter when you want to go to a new line while you're editing the same cell and again this works with text as well as formulas so i hope that you like this video if you did please like and subscribe and have a great day
