on this day in 1972 the Dow closed above a thousand for the first time ever the Dow Jones Industrial Average is arguably the most famous stock market index it was the brainchild of Charles Dow who launched it in 1896 as a way of tracking the state of the economy the Dow is calculated by averaging the stock prices of 30 Blue Chip companies it follows which include giants like apple Walmart and PNG in simple terms if the Dow Rises stocks are up and if the Dow Falls stops her down and it's come quite a long ways since breaking four digits in 1972. it reached an all-time high in January of this year at 36 000 before falling sharply after recession theaters began to swirl on the global economy [Music]
