well let's speak to simon squib he's the founder of purposeful project which is a platform that supports people wanting to become entrepreneurs a kind of business within a business in many ways at simon um just talk about how you got involved in this what made you incense start up your own business to help others out well um i i was actually uh kicked out of home at 15 and left school and actually forced into entrepreneurship i never thought i was an entrepreneur and and i had to become one to survive and i guess uh you know it was i look back now bizarrely it was it was a bit of luck for me because it woke me up and gave me uh the drive to go out there and learn entrepreneurship and i've realized that anyone could be an entrepreneur it's something you can actually learn which isn't something i was taught in school so that's how i became an entrepreneur right now it would feel like almost an intimidating prospect to set up your own business particularly because of the uncertainty what are the main things the barriers that stop people sort of taking the plunge to say okay i'm going to go out on my own you well a lot of the time i mean i speak to hundreds of people every week that want to start a business of their own and i think the initial uh concern and fair concern is is the finances i think people want to have a regular monthly amount of money coming in to to support their costs so i think money is definitely an issue i think um i think however for a lot of businesses you can start them up with no money and and sometimes you can get your first client with no money you can just pitch to someone and tell them what you're doing and you can begin to bring in some money before the business is even launched and i think that's the thing i'm trying to teach people as well share that that worry about money but having said that quite often people do need money so that's why in my organization we've also partnered up with people like thai bank and a few other brilliant institutions to bring money to people that need it and and help them get that business going but yeah that's one of the big barriers but a lot of it is mindset a lot of the time people haven't been trained they haven't been given the cash flow management skills or the knowledge to know how to you know pitch to get a client so they have revenue coming in from day one and these are the things that my organization we're trying to we're trying to solve it's really interesting because anecdotally i've noticed that a lot of people i know have decided to try and start their own business even if it's on the side in addition to the main fighting job yeah it's a side hustle yeah i like that but i'm really interested in that idea that a lot of people want to be the wrong boss they don't necessarily want to do that kind of nine to five is that the main motivation certainly the new generation of uh workforce they don't want to go and sit in an office i mean before kobe this was the case and no no one the nine to five system is actually a very bad construct anyway i think working from home we're all realizing that was always a pretty weird structure and and for a lot of people who want to be their own boss actually what's interesting is that they don't necessarily want to be their own boss a lot of people fear that the responsibility of it but i think once you become your own boss there is no going back i mean by the time i was 16 i never wanted to work for someone else again the idea of working for someone you know it just but i think for a lot of people it is the security thing it feels like working for someone else is safer but the reality is and the truth is when you work for yourself it's hard at the beginning but it gets easier over time but when you work for someone else it's harder it's easier at the beginning but gets harder over time because you're not in control of your day you're not in control of the mission of the business and that's another thing i'm trying to educate people about that the psychology of it is um you know do the hard thing now you know start something for yourself now and and and that's what a lot of people are doing and it's very exciting certainly very exciting for the uk there's a lot of brilliant people here with brilliant brilliant ideas and ability to do it and if we can just give them a little bit of help they will create great british companies uh britain's stop being a country of shopkeepers in a country of entrepreneurs instead uh simon squibb founder of purposeful project thank you very much indeed this morning
