openair scholars is an intensive four-month full-time six-month program we provide stipends and more importantly mentorship to engineers from underrepresented backgrounds to study deep learning and to produce our project this program is important to us to open add to the field because diversity is core to ai having a positive effect on the world i think that it's necessary to ensure that the advanced ai systems in the future are built to benefit everyone and with the context and background of everyone's of everyone's expertise scholars are all strong engineers but they come from a wide variety of fields software aerospace physics others and the scholars that are presented today are in the top two percent of applicants this is something that we hope to do much more in the future and we hope that more of the field will do as well were the or short of great talent in the field in general and we have found continuously that by bringing in people who have a strong background engineering and interest in artificial intelligence we can create more talent in the field uh thanks to the mentors at openai who have given time and guidance over the last few months without them this program wouldn't be possible at all um it takes a lot of commitment to be able to make this work uh and we're super thankful that they do uh and most of all we're thankful to the scholars for uh for joining the program and for the work they've done here
