Deploy an Azure Databricks Workspace

Hi everyone, my name is Alish Nandan and I'm a scale solution engineer at datab bricks. Today I'm going to show you how to deploy an Azure datab bricks workspace through the Azure portal. So here you can see that I am on the Azure portal. I will search for Azure datab bricks and click on Azure datab bricks. Now I'll click on this create button on the top left. And now you can see I am on the workspace creation page. So the first thing that I need to select is the subscription. For me, it's auto selected, but you can click on this drop-down to select your subscription. You have to make sure that the subscription you choose is a pay go subscription and not a free tier subscription. Also, to create an Azure databicks workspace, you should have the contributor or the owner role on the subscription that you're using. If you don't have the owner or the contributor role on the subscription, then your custom role definition must have the list of permissions mentioned here added. Right? Okay. The next thing we need to do is either select an existing resource group from the drop-down or create a new one. I will go ahead and create a new resource group for this workspace deployment and I am going to call it uh Azure demo arch and click on okay. Now we are ready to start filling in our workspace name. So let me just enter a name for my workspace. So I'll call it ADB demo def. Next, I need to choose a region from the dropdown. Uh, so I'll stick with East US. I'm good with that. And to make sure you get access to all the data bricks feature, make sure you go with the premium pricing tier. On the workspace type, uh, there are two options, hybrid and serverless. Hybrid workspaces offer both classic compute as well as serverless compute options. This also means that there are a few resources deployed by data bricks in your Azure account to support this workspace setup. Whereas for the serverless workspace, it supports only serverless compute options and it comes with a datab bricks manage default storage. Meaning you can start creating manage tables and volumes even without connecting your storage account to datab bricks. For this video, we will stick with the hybrid deployment type and move ahead. The managed resource group name is an optional field uh that you could leave leave empty uh if you like but uh I'll just add a name for the managed resource group name as well. I'll call it ADB demo dev - managed RG right. So as I mentioned right for uh the hybrid workspace there are a few resources deployed in your Azure account. So all of these managed resources would be deployed in the managed resource group and these resources could be like uh a storage account for the workspace root storage a VNET along with the NAD gateway to host the uh classic compute VMs and so on. Right? Okay. There are also a bunch of uh customizations that you can do for your workspace around networking encryption security and compliance. You could also add custom tags for your workspace which is considered as a good practice. Uh but for this video I'm going to skip that and just go for review and create. So as soon as I clicked on review plus create you can see that uh the validation process for the workspace has started. And now you can see the validation is successful which means I am good to create this workspace. So I will just hit on this create button at the bottom and that should start the workspace deployment process. Okay, you can see that the workspace deployment is in progress. This can take a few minutes to complete. So we'll just wait. Okay, so now you can see that the workspace deployment is complete and I'll hit on go to resource. And here on the databicks workspace page, I will click on launch workspace to launch my workspace. Great. Now you can see that I am logged in to the workspace that I just created.
