what do you feel is the current state of machine learning systems how do you see it right now and where we're at yeah I think we are I think we are in the some kind of turning point in terms of applications of machine learning that we have today comparing with the past and same perspective that I see that assume there's some kind of march of regulation very heavily regulation over systems are now so today I'm seeing that there's tons of on you tools or new platforms that you're that you machine learning it's easier to do than for example five years ago so we have dot science data break several different platforms I don't know Neptune and so on but we can see today that we still have this kind of this lack of professional is not professional is but some kind of majors in terms of how those machine learning applications are are put in production right now so and and this I mean I make this conclusion based on on several different communities that I participate not only here in Germany for course but some communities in Brazil when they feel in doubt so because I have some family there and it's super cool everyone it's talking about machine learning but when we discuss about okay how are you putting this machine learning system in future right now so and and we can find the same problems like well we don't have a unified way to do some kind of any testing or we have a tons of glue code inside our code base we don't have code review and in the there--some and i put that in perspective with a very big march of regulation so I wrote a piece about accountability and accountability machine learning systems that at least here in Europe the most of regulators that governments are very well concerned about platforms doing decisions automatically so it means that the era of a single guy with with since quitting inside a machine it's over it's completely over right now so if you're talking about some critic complications of machine learning no matter what inference classification tensors and so on we are going to have we need to have this this this work will this entire workflow completely in a more professional way like software engineering I mean and I completely I completely believe that mushroom learn operations would be would be would be that the philosophy or the few that are going to put down this kind of hype and and make the common graph with regulators and all the stakeholders

Original Description

What is the current state of Machine Learning in 2020? In our 5th meetup, we spoke with the Brasilian ML Engineer Flavio Clesio. In this video he talks to us about his feelings around the current state of machine learning. This is taken from a longer conversation that can be found here: https://youtu.be/9g4deV1uNZo Machine Learning Systems play a huge role in several businesses from the Banking industry to recommender systems in entertainment applications until health domains. The era of "A Data Scientist with a Script in a single machine" is officially over in high stakes ML. We're entering an era of Machine Learning Operations (MLOps) where those critical applications that impact society and businesses need to be aware of aspects like active failures and latent conditions. This talk will discuss risk assessment in ML Systems from the perspective of reliability, safety and especially causal aspects that can lead to the rise of silent risks in said systems. Slides to the talk can be found here: https://docs.google.com/presentation/d/1gP0A_EXLYafeYAak_vM8lA2nwT7EBaNv3QAWkzBC004/edit?usp=sharing Bio: Flavio Clesio is Machine Learning Engineer (NLP, CV, Marketplace RecSys) and at the moment works at MyHammer AG, where he helps build Core Machine Learning applications to exploit revenue opportunities and automation in decision making. Prior to MyHammer, Flavio was a Data Intelligence lead in the mobile industry, and business intelligence analyst in financial markets, specifically in Non-Performing Loans. He holds a master’s degree in computational intelligence applied in financial markets (exotic credit derivatives). This was a virtual fireside chat between Flavio Clesio, Demetrios Brinkmann and the MLOps community. Relevant links can be found below.
