as some of you may have heard there was a decision that came out so another week and another grand jury declined to indict a white police officer who killed an unarmed black man we're grieving again this time it was a Staten Island grand jury they declined to indict New York City police officer Daniel panta for the July 17th death of Eric Garner the week before grand jury and Ferguson did the same with another case of an unarmed black man being killed by a white policemen but with this case there's also video of what happened I'm minding my buiness please just leave me alone I told you the last time please leave me alone don't touch me not touch me you can hear him say I can't breathe the police officer told the grand jury he didn't mean to harm Garner Garner's wife did not accept this kind of apology the time for remorse would have been when my husband was yelling to breee that would have been the time for him to show some type of remorse he's still working he's still getting a paycheck he's still feeding his kids and my husband is 6 fet under and I'm looking for a way to feed my kids now but police are rarely prosecuted they tell us at least that a prosecutor can indict a ham a ham sandwich for clearly a black man's life is not worth a ham sandwich when you put these stories together and when cops are prosecuted they're really rarely convicted some politicians tried to blame other forces for Garner's death like the law that taxes cigarette sales police were accusing Garner of selling untaxed cigarettes when they arrested him some politician put a tax of $585 on a pack of cigarettes and Congressman Peter King even tried to blame Garner's weight not the policeman who's choking him you had a 350 lb person who is resisting arrest the police were trying to bring him down as quickly as possible but most saw the connection to the racism of the US Criminal Justice System Bill DeBlasio New York City's mayor connected it to his black son Dante Charlene and I have had to talk to Dante for years about the dangers that he may face because of a history that still hangs over us we've had to literally train him as families have all over this city for decades and how to take special care in any encounter he has with the police police officers who are there to protect him and the President also broke into a pre-planned speech to address the nation I'm not interested in talk I'm interested in action and I am absolutely committed as president of the United States to making sure that we have a country in which everybody believes in the core principle that we are equal under the law when anybody in this country is not being treated equally under the law that's a problem and it's my job as president to help solve it and so again protests erupted around the country and a man known for making jokes might have portrayed the seriousness of the situation best uh if comedy is tragedy plus time I need more time but I would really settle for less tragedy to be honest with you
