Reviews GetResponse as an email marketing platform with advanced automation workflows and support for website event tracking

Full Transcript

hi guys Luis here and from authority hacker and in this video I'm gonna give you a quick overview of get response which as you probably know is a very popular email marketing tool I'm going to dive right in here with the segmentation as you can see I've got around about a thousand subscribers I'm not going to go into those because you're gonna see some live emails otherwise but the way this works basically is it uses a tag and custom field system for subscriber management now I wasn't sure what the difference between those was initially but it turns out that custom fields can have a value whereas a tag is a value in itself now it's still a little bit confusing if you're not familiar with how that works but I think for most people they're gonna stick with tags you can use automation for tagging so for example you can create a trigger and action workflow to add a tag when a subscriber for example clicks on a link in one of your emails and then you can leverage that tag in a completely different automation so here's what that looks like in the automation workflow builder and I'm going to cover this a lot more in a second but this is obviously a very basic example but it just shows you that tags can be used in this way and that's not something that can be said about every email marketing tool that I've looked at but really this is where the real power of the system lies because get response like active campaign also tracks your site meaning you can throw in other triggers based on interactions with your website as well as your emails so that that's where things get really really interesting and overall I think the segmentation and tagging abilities in get response are really really solid moving on to the actual automation now and I've already I'm already in the automation workflow builder but it like I said it does go beyond just tagging so the elements or the building blocks are in the right pane here and honestly there aren't as many as you would see in active campaign or drip but I still think is relatively strong area connecting these together is a simple drag-and-drop so I'm just going to drag it bring a couple in here just to show you and you can connect these up like so so really really easy-to-use I will say at times it can be a little bit fiddly it doesn't quite connect the way you want it to but you do eventually get used to that one thing I don't like here is that you you can't create emails from the from the Builder itself you have to manually exit go into emails and set one up and this is similar to active campaign except get response doesn't even give you a prompt to leave the Builder you have to manually exit and then return to it later so it does really mess with your rhythm and I just think it's a bad user experience overall despite the minor issues here the the automations builder is actually quite flexible as you can see there are a number of conditions and actions and for each of these if you click on that you can open the properties panel and narrow down what it is you want this to achieve so again overall very similar to active campaign which is definitely not a bad thing okay let's talk about a be testing and get response has some great split testing options that go beyond just testing subject lines and that means you can actually test the actual email content this is something you enable as you set up your email campaigns so this is this is a brand new campaign here that I've just set up and what you need to do is click distribution settings here to display these options and it's not actually very obvious unless you're really really looking for it so I think that could be made a lot clearer but once this is open all you have to do is enable this ad test and click to proceed to the next step then progress through this as you normally would so you pick a template for example and I'm going to go into the template stuff in a moment but just to show you how this a be test one thing works I'm gonna walk you through the whole process now now I'm not going to make any changes to this I'm just going to click Next and show you what happens on the next spring so this is where you start to configure your test and as you can see you get four different options here and subject line from field content and delivery time now the these three here are very common you're gonna see these in most email marketing tools but the the ability to split actual email content is something that you don't see too often so I'm gonna click that you can add a second variation and a third up to five different messages just to see which one of your variations are going to perform the best and you don't have to start from scratch you can even duplicate the existing template that you have here with all the text so you can make those very small changes and see which one has the most impact so overall I was actually really impressed by this aspect of get response and the split testing side of this tool is very very good okay let's talk about forms and you can build forms in various ways with get response including a step-by-step wizard integrations or you know just plain HTML most people are going to use the wizard here and honestly it offers a generous number of pre-designed templates based on different use cases like newsletters free downloads and things like feedback requests as well so clicking any of these will take you to the drag-and-drop form editor customization here is pretty straightforward it's all done through the sidebar and there are a good number of styling options available so again if you click on an element and go to the style section you can see that there is plenty of stuff here to get your teeth into so in terms of design and customization I think that get response does a great job as for forum behavior however anything you create in this wizard can only be embedded on your site as an inline form if you want things like pop-ups or animated overlays you'll need to use the list builder app so I'm just taking a step back here and I've clicked on list builder apps and you see I've got a few options now these do use a different editor so there are fewer customization options available some of them are very very restricted I'm going to click into one of these here let's do exit intent and as you can see there are only a few options here so don't expect the same level of customization that you have with the inline forms although it is nice to be able to great these different types of forms and have different form functionality because again this is not something that you see in every email marketing tool so overall I think get response handles forms really well with a good mix of form functionality but I would say anything outside of inline forms may be slightly too restricted in terms of design okay let's talk about email templates and I briefly showed you this earlier but I want to dive into this a bit more now and as you can see we've got quite a few templates to choose from there are also a number of categories down the side so you can drill down into your specific industry there's actually a good number of templates here as well around 200 or so and even though they aren't all the most attractive they definitely aren't too bad and you shouldn't have any trouble finding a few here that you can work with clicking any of these templates will open the drag-and-drop editor so let's just click this one replace now as you might expect at this point the editor is actually pretty good there are a few issues that I do have with this though and I'm gonna show you what they are now so if I click on an element here I have a number of options to choose from now immediately I'm not entirely sure what all of these buttons do so maybe it's just me but I feel like these icons could be clearer maybe have a tool tip or something to just give me an indication of what these do I find that the the basic blocks here are as as they say very basic that there's not too much going on in terms of what you can add to the email template itself and if you really look here you're basically getting a text block an image block and then the same thing again just in a different order and you also get a horizontal ruler here and so it's for me not quite as good as perhaps the form builder is I feel like there's there's a lot more flexibility there but I really like about the template builder here is that you get a mobile view a responsive view of your template so you can see your adjustments in real time and you can actually navigate this as well and see just exactly how it's going to look on mobile yet response integrates with around a hundred and eighty different apps and services 182 to be exact and that includes apps like Shopify PayPal WooCommerce and Soho but and it is also supported by zapier so unless your current setup relies on more obscure applications and services you should really have no problems when it comes to integrations with get response but obviously I would always advise that you check out the integrations page before you switch over in this case that would be get response calm thought / all - integrations in terms of tracking and reporting similarly to a be test this is set up as you create your email so you would expand the distribution settings here and you would turn on click click reporting or Google Analytics or both now this is actually an interesting addition here the Google Analytics because you already know click tracking is but this type integration with Google Analytics means that it can pass data through to your Google account simply by clicking this button so that also comes with some interesting additions like real time activity tracking and even ROI tracking so it's definitely trying to go the extra mile here which is always good to see however I will say that reporting was a bit of a letdown so I'm going to take you over to that now and if we look at the reports that are available here there really aren't many to choose from I might look at the subscription analytics and see finally let's talk about support and there are a few ways here you can get support from get response you can look at tutorials fa Q's webinars there's also downloads as well the knowledgebase is where you're encouraged to start and I actually like documentation here I think it's really well laid out very thorough they include video walkthroughs along with transcripts so let's explain an example here so this is how do I search for contacts in my account and there's a button here to bring up a video another thing to consider though is community and strangely I couldn't find any Facebook groups around get response maybe I'm missing something there really don't know they do however offer a 24/7 live chat support which is awesome the chat agents also seem to known a platform well and handled my questions without any problems so overall aside from what appears to be a lack of any real community surrounding get response and a way to tap into the experience of other users the documentation and a 24/7 live chat support really saved the day so that's my quick walkthrough of get response and I have a full review of this on the authority hacker blog which I highly recommend you check out I go into this in a lot more detail so I hope this was helpful and I will see you in the next video
