Explains the importance of formula order in Quickbase

Full Transcript

Hey [music] hey [music] and now we're going to talk about order of operations uh order of the logic applied to your formula. So it is important what order you write your conditions in. For example, if we took our 70% uh value and set that in the first line, that changes how this formula is going to perform because anything at and above 70% is going to return good. That includes anything 90%, 92%, 99%, 100%, it's all going to return good because it's above 70. And then the formula is not going to continue on to evaluate the next line because we've already met that first condition. So if we save this and take a look at that behavior. Uh sure, let's refresh. 10% needs improvement. 80% is good. 90% also good. 100% still good because the order of the logic in our formula states anything above 70 give us good and anything above 90 is going to be above 70. So we'll never get to that second line that says excellent. And I guess the last thing I can show you is something I would strongly encourage which is commenting your formula. uh you write a comment with double slash and then write the words anything that comes after that slash you see it's grayed out the formula lier is going to ignore it when you go on to another line then it continues reading as if you're um reading the formula but uh another line you can put notes in to explain what you were thinking when you did this this way and let me tell you future you will be so appreciative of that when you come back to your formula and look at it and say what the heck was I thinking when I made that much less if or much more so if this is somebody else's formula and you come into it and need to troubleshoot or change update something understanding what you put in here and why you did it that way goes a very long way let me tell you um and yeah that's that's the basics of formulas. I hope that helps.
