About this lesson

Most of the conversation in the investment banking world revolves around becoming an analyst, but there’s a whole series of roles beyond the Analyst role if you stay in investment banking or if you join investment banking out of an MBA program. Some individuals are promoted directly from analyst to associate, but the vast majority come out of top MBA programs. When you join as an associate, it’s often with the intention of making a career out of investment banking. You start as an associate managing analysts and shepherding the core work of deal analysis and slide creation. After a few years the next level is  Director (sometimes called Vice President) where you become the deal quarterback, which involves ensuring successful execution of deals that are brought in by senior bankers. After that, the next role is Executive Director (sometimes Senior Vice President) which is essentially a Managing Director in training role where you start to build relationships and bring in clients. And then finally, the top role is Managing Director  (sometimes called Partner) which is the top role where you are building and facilitating client relationships. The last thing to note is that there are sometimes senior Managing Director or senior partner roles at some firms, which are the most tenured individuals at the firm. In these last two roles, bankers typically command seven and sometimes eight figure compensation.
