While I didn't study hurricanes directly, I worked on the physics modern meteorology uses to study these storms. Hurricanes are massive storms with winds over 74 miles per hour starting as thunderstorms over warm oceans. >> [music] >> Rising warm water vapor creates low pressure forming storm clouds that begin to swirl and gain strength. These storms are deadly, but we use science to predict where and when they will occur. Maps show ocean currents and surface temperatures crucial for understanding what drives these storms. From June to November, we analyze temperature patterns to hypothesize about hurricane formation. Learn more with free classroom activities in the description. They might just blow you away.
