You really have to test which of the details that really serve the goal of the story. And I generally start with getting people to really understand the essence, the basic structure. What's the before? What's the turning point moment? What's the after? And we really boil down the essence and the architecture of the story. Because a story is about change. It's about transformation. So, you need to be able to articulate that change and show that change. And once you can really get to the basics, the fundamental structure of the story, then you can start to flesh it out with details and the senses and bringing it to life.
