Let me offer you a piece of advice I’ve shared many times over the years. At first hearing, it may sound a bit simple, but don’t dismiss it too quickly. Read the room. Before the presentation. Before the meeting begins. Before you speak at that dinner table. Remove your personal agenda and take a moment to look around. Who’s there? Who’s watching whom? What’s the mood? Are there unspoken dynamics at play? The truth is, the room will tell you exactly how to proceed, if you’re disciplined enough to pay attention. It will make a vast and big difference in how you succeed at those gatherings. Read the room well, and everything changes. Think on it.
