How CISOs Can Better Connect with Their Boards and Make the Case for Cybersecurity

The events of the past two years have elevated the cybersecurity conversation at the board level, making the role of the CISO more prominent. After being viewed as pure technologists for years, CISOs are finally getting a seat at the table. But getting an audience doesn’t mean CISOs are also receiving the support they need. A Proofpoint survey found that 49% of CISOs still don’t see eye to eye with their boards—and 49% feel that their job responsibilities are excessive. In this talk, Lucia Milică Stacy, Global Resident CISO at Proofpoint, will discuss how CISOs can make a better case for cybersecurity with language and narratives that relate to their specific board audience. She’ll share how techniques such as the ancient art of storytelling can help CISOs craft better messaging and how to leverage a tried-and-true framework that will prepare them to address the board with confidence. Throughout centuries, people have used storytelling to build trust, convey meaning, and insight action. This ancient art is a fundamental communication vehicle that remains relevant in the modern business world, and Lucia will explain how CISOs can use this art to communicate more effectively and confidently with their board members. Now that they have a voice, CISOs have a tremendous opportunity to influence their organizations’ security approach and roadmap strategically. This opportunity is especially important as geopolitical tensions, targeted attacks, and growing insider threats put more pressure on organizations to improve their cyber defenses. Lucia’s presentation will arm CISOs with the tools they need to make a successful transition to their role as strategic advisers and help them connect with the board so they can steer the cybersecurity agenda.
