How a Hackathon Team Built an AI Emergency Response System in 3 Hours

Sentinel is an AI-powered emergency response system inspired by Australia's devastating 2019 Black Summer bushfires, where overwhelmed call centers were forced to shut down as call volumes surged 8,400%. Sentinel works as an offline-to-online bridge that intercepts mass call volumes during disasters, delivers real-time guidance to callers through voice even when internet infrastructure is down, triages emergencies by distinguishing between general questions and life-threatening situations, and feeds verified location and victim data to first responders via a live dashboard. Jason demos the system live on stage, showing how it handles a caller reporting a fire and provides actionable guidance including nearby hospital locations. The project was built using ElevenLabs' voice models and was created by a team of four who had only met four months earlier at another hackathon.
