Engaging Students in Reading (REL West)
About this lesson
This video was created by REL West for the Toolkit for Teaching K–3 Reading Comprehension. The video includes interviews with three teachers, two literacy coaches, and a district leader from Dysart School District in Arizona. The practitioners responded to the following questions about engaging their students in reading: How do you set up your classroom to support students’ engagement in reading? What routines do you have to support students’ choice of reading activities and independence as learners? How do you provide opportunities for peer collaboration and small-group discussions around reading? This recording was prepared for the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) under Contract 91990022C0003 by Regional Educational Laboratory (REL) West at WestEd. The content of the publication does not necessarily reflect the views or policies of IES or the U.S. Department of Education, nor does mention of trade names, commercial products, or organizations imply endorsement by the U.S. Government.
