the listeners are like, I'm going to go ask a question and then people kind of don't share or it feels it is like, well, I'm never going to do that again. That's exactly the point. That's exactly the moment when, okay, we're just creating a new muscle, we're creating a new habit, we're shifting the direction of the team culture. So, you have to be willing to feel some of those growing pains and some of that discomfort and a little bit of awkward. And then the awkward's going to transform, but you got to be willing to go through the kind of sticky sticky like this is uncomfortable. We're telling stories. Ew, I don't like it. And you might get some resistance. If you decide to stick with it, you'll start to get buy-in and people will start to show up in different ways and be willing to take more risks and be willing to collaborate in different ways and something's going to change.
Original Description
Culture doesn't shift from one conversation. It shifts from the habit of having them.
Johanna Walker describes a dinner with a team of engineers, stiff, work-focused, people mostly keeping to themselves. One question changed the room: "When was a time you got in trouble?" That connection outlasted the meal. Small prompts, repeated consistently, are how a storytelling culture actually gets built.
What would one honest question do for your team this week?
