today let's talk about one of the most powerful charts available in training Peaks the Performance Management chart or the PMC it all starts with training stress every workout you do is assigned a training stress score based on duration and how intense the workout was relative to your threshold here we see a red dot representing each day's workout for an entire season the red dots at the bottom of the screen indicate that there were no workouts for that day by taking an exponentially weighted average of that stress from the past seven days we're able to calculate what we call your acute training load or an estimate of your fatigue accounting for the workouts you have done in about the last two weeks here you can see on days with a workout with a high training stress score the ATL climbs sharply in response you do a hard workout today and you will f it in the coming days we also use each day TSS to calculate chronic training load or Fitness CTL is an exponentially weighted average of the last 42 days of training stress and reflects the training you have done over the last 3 months however the workouts you did 15 days ago will impact your Fitness more than the workout you did 6 weeks ago you may notice that as Fitness goes up so does fatigue only at a greater rate the PMC helps to tell a story consistent training is marked by a steady rise in ATL and CTL where a sharp drop might indicate a time off due to sickness or injury finally by subtracting yesterday's ATL from yesterday's CTL we come up with the yellow line or the training stress balance just because you are fit does not mean you are ready to race at your best a negative tsp would indicate that you are carrying a lot of fatigue and not on form however by tapering You Can Shed fatigue at a greater rate than you lose Fitness and come into form on the day that matters most race day here you can also see some dashed CTL ATL and TSB lines which denote that they are in the future by entering TSS values into the planned field of a workout you can model a future PMC this can be an extremely powerful tool as you attempt to plan the perfect taper for your goal event there is no single TSB that works for every athlete but as a general rule of thumb you would want to be slightly negative up to positive around 25 or so if your TSB becomes tooo High it may indicate that you taper too much and have lost Fitness the TSB can also give you Clues into how much stress you can handle before getting sick or injured going forward you would know that you would have to take some recovery days before reaching that negative a number in Short Fitness minus fatigue equals four for more information on the PMC or other training Peaks charts go to help. tr peaks.com
