Will humans ever explore the entire galaxy? No. But AI will, and it's already happening. AI enhanced space tech can make snap decisions about what to photograph, where to fly, and even how to dodge debris. But this is only the beginning. AI could help us reach Proxima Centuri, our closest star, and the potentially habitable exoplanet Proxima B. It would take up to 80,000 years to reach it with conventional rockets. But scientists have a plan to send hundreds of probes with sails propelled by a massive laser. They'd reach the planet in just 20 years. Communicating with the swarm would be hard as light takes up to eight years to make the round trip. So, the probes would need AI to coordinate autonomously. A hive mind that could report back on signs of life. Is there anything AI can't do? Well, it can't be the first human on Mars. To colonize our solar system will eventually have to go there. AI can help by building underground habitats before we arrive and provide healthcare once we're there. With AI as our buddy, the future is still bright for human astronauts.
