This Machine Launches Ropes

This looks like a gun but it’s actually used to save lives at sea. It’s called a pneumatic line thrower, and instead of firing bullets, it launches a rope using compressed air. When ships are too far apart to throw a line by hand, this device can send one across the water in seconds even through wind and rough waves. And that small rope is only the first step. Crews then use it to pull over much heavier ropes, cables, or rescue lines.
