In December, Glenn Allsopp published on Ahrefs study that showed that self-promotional listicles were absolutely crushing it on ChatGPT. >> Let's do the math. So, how much did it drop for OpenAI? From 23% to 17%. But, we checked the overall amount of sources that ChatGPT is citing. It turned out that at the same time, it reduced the total amount of sources by 33%. So, if you look at the data and see, "Okay, ChatGPT dropped a third of the sources, but only a fifth of the self-promoting listicles dropped," it proves that more or less self-promoting listicles have better survival rate in ChatGPT dropping a third of the sources, which is actually proving the opposite. Do more of those.

Original Description

ChatGPT has reduced the number of sources it cites by roughly 33%, but not all content types were affected equally. According to recent data and analysis of ChatGPT citations, self-promotional listicles (like “best tools” or “top platforms” articles) are holding up better than most other content formats. While overall citations dropped significantly, these types of pages saw a much smaller decline — meaning they now have a higher survival rate in AI-generated answers. For SEOs and content marketers, this is a strong signal. It suggests that listicles, comparison posts, and roundup content are particularly effective for AI SEO and visibility in ChatGPT and generative search. If you want to increase your chances of being cited in AI answers, this is a content format worth doubling down on. Sounds interesting? Watch the full webinar on our channel!
