Designed by Glaswegian architect James Hamilton, its Italianate sandstone façade, elaborate sculptures, and ornate plasterwork by George Crowe make it one of Belfast’s most admired and best-loved buildings. Historical Significance and Architecture The site was chosen for its central position in Belfast’s mercantile district, with Waring Street named after a prominent local merchant. The Ulster Bank directors sought a building that would project elegance, substance, and prosperity, ultimately selecting Hamilton’s design from over sixty submissions. The result was a two-storey structure featuring paired windows, a three-bay pediment, and sculptures depicting Commerce, Justice, and Britannia. The grand central dome in what is now The Great Room Restaurant is framed by Corinthian columns and adorned with putti representing science, painting, scripture, and music. The building’s proportions and decorative style were praised at the 1858 London Architectural Exhibition as “very commendable, earnest, massive, rich and suitable”. Transformation into a Luxury Hotel After serving as a bank headquarters for nearly 150 years, the building was acquired by the Beannchor Group in 2004 and transformed into The Merchant Hotel, opening in 2006. The restoration respected the building’s architectural integrity while introducing luxurious modern amenities. In 2010, a striking Art Deco-inspired extension was added, providing additional rooms, a spa, a rooftop gym with panoramic city views, and new event spaces.
