Historical Background The church was commissioned by King Frederik V in 1749 as the centrepiece of Frederiksstaden, a district built to commemorate the 300th anniversary of the House of Oldenburg’s accession to the Danish throne. The original architect, Nicolai Eigtved, envisioned a lavish rococo structure with a grand dome inspired by St Peter’s Basilica in Rome. The foundation stone was laid in 1749, but the project soon encountered severe financial difficulties and the death of Eigtved in 1754, leading to decades of stalled construction and changing plans. By 1770, the ambitious marble-clad design was abandoned, and the church remained a half-finished ruin for nearly 150 years. In 1874, industrialist Carl Frederik Tietgen acquired the site under the condition that he would complete the church in a style faithful to the original plans. Architect Ferdinand Meldahl was tasked with finishing the project, using a combination of Norwegian marble for the existing walls and more economical limestone for the remainder of the structure. The church was finally inaugurated in 1894, marking the end of one of Denmark’s longest and most turbulent building projects.
