When you finally set boundaries with difficult people, they will take them as an attack. And even though you know that's going to happen, those conversations are still really difficult, right? Because difficult people love to create a power imbalance from the start. They're really good at making you question yourself. They're really good at making you feel like advocating for your needs is selfish. But let me just ask you, isn't it funny how they have no issue talking about how other people need to meet their needs? They don't question themselves, right? They aren't even accused of being selfish because we've all been conditioned to avoid conflict with difficult people because they will make your life, that's right, difficult. But let's not forget that the people who feel the most attacked by you finally setting boundaries are usually the people who benefited the most from you not having any. And just a reminder, boundaries are simply what you need to feel safe and connected in any given relationship. And the people who actually love and care about you don't want you saying yes when you really meant no. People that love you don't want you to feel pressured or uncomfortable. Difficult, self-centered people have no issue with that as long as their needs are getting met. But that's not love.
