Michigan Ross Strategy PhD Program Introduction

[Music] Welcome to the strategy PhD program at the University of Michigan Ros School Business. This is a place to start your scholarly journey. Here, professors and students work together to seek answers to some of the most fundamental research questions related to strategy. At Raw Strategy, faculty study and specialize in a wide variety of topics such as corporate strategy, competitive strategy, innovation, international business, political strategy, business models and ecosystem strategy, entrepreneurship, economic sociology, and corporate governance. Such a diverse strategy faculty ensures that no matter what your research interests are, there will always be someone here to study with you. And I want to tell you that here we have a very rigorous PhD program where you will learn to do research that's on the frontier of a strategy, very rigorous research that will last for the whole time that you are in the program. Michigan is world famous as a center for interdisciplinary social science research. We have top five programs in a wide variety of departments ranging from sociology to political science to anthropology and beyond. And we take full advantage of that here. Our research doesn't rely on any one discipline. It integrates perspectives and methods from multiple disciplines to explain strategic management phenomena. And that turns out to be an excellent approach to doing research that is both interesting to academics and important to managers. At Raw Strategy, faculty members are deeply committed to training, developing, and preparing our students for a successful academic career. Over this past year, I've developed an idea that certain there's a theoretical aspect and there's an empirical aspect. And so, I would go to certain faculty members to get insight on how to frame this idea theoretically and literatures I could draw on and potentially contribute to. And I would go to other faculty members for insight as exactly how to execute this empirically. with the input of such a diverse range of faculty, each of us as PhD students grows um and become sort of the best researcher that we can possibly be. So I joined the PhD program from Ford where I worked in the planning and strategy department. Coming in I had no research experience. However, I felt that the collaborative relationships both across students and then between students and faculty really helped me develop my research skills as a emerging scholar. So what I really like about my experience here in Michigan is that we have the freedom to take classes not just inside business schools but also outside. Taking classes from political science helped me generate new ideas. I further crafted that new idea with my advisor which led to a publication in the end. I believe the unique feature of uh Michigan Ross program is the exceptional support and attention to doctoral students because the ratio between students and faculties is almost close to oneonone. I can always look for some faculty who can help me with my research idea either that be in the domain of research theory methodology or even a broader framework. So from day one, this program enabled me to focus on research and in the end helped me to produce high impact research and dissertation. For research, students can work with open-minded advisors across multiple disciplines to advance their knowledge and ideas. Culturally, Ross is a diverse and vibrant place. You get to meet people from all over the world, expanding your horizon and embracing different perspectives. At Ross, you will also sense a strong fabric of community. You'll make lifetime friends and cherish the memories. So, I so far I really enjoying the life living in Anabra. Um, I think it's one of the safest city I've ever been to in the whole United States. So, in so far, I really like the life here. Uh, one of the questions that I had when I was joining the PhD program was are there other students who have kids? And I came to know of Kite. he he has and there are a couple of other students as well who have kids and that gave me a little more confidence that okay I can do this too. Yeah, being here with a child is actually really interesting but it's actually really beneficial. Ann Arbor is a great place to raise children. I mean we were just talking about this about the schools here. So there are great public schools here and private schools here and we've explored all of those options and we've been very happy with our time in Ann Arbor. The University of Michigan is an intellectual hub filled with worldrenowned experts and is really on the cutting edge of industry relevant research. An added bonus of being here at the University of Michigan is that we are stones throw away from Detroit, Michigan, the motor city, the historical home of pioneering mass manufacturing technological innovation. And it really allows us unprecedented access to not just test and refine theories related to change, entrepreneurship, and innovation, but to actually build new ones. And so that's one of the many reasons I'm really excited to be here. So what do professors do? While we conduct research, publish academic papers, teach undergrad and graduate students, and serve our home institutions and academy at large.
