for lawyers managing client expectations is crucial to a successful relationship it all starts with clear transparent communication you've probably heard the saying under promise and overd deliver and I have to tell you that really makes sense in a legal practice when you set the bar too high because you want the client to sign up with you you only set the client up for disappointment instead build in a cushion for example if you think a case is going to take 6 months tell them it might take eight if you're early they'll be impressed and if you're late it just damages trust but don't just manage expectations on time and outcomes set clear boundaries on costs communication frequency and all of the other potential hurdles that you know are coming up in their case educating your clients is about the legal process and that is key let them know upfront if there are risks or unknowns and don't be afraid to say I don't know but I'm going to find out the answer because this honesty goes so far when we're trying to build trust and at the end of the day each client is unique take the time to understand their goals and concerns and you'll Foster a relationship that's built on trust and transparency
