About this lesson

Look for the small changes. Big changes rarely happen. You ARE making a difference, teachers.

Full Transcript

This is going to be hard for you to hear teachers, but not every win is perfect behavior. Make sure you're celebrating when a student comes down in 3 minutes instead of 15. When another one accepts a consequence without arguing with you. When that one student that calls out constantly with their hand up finally just raises their hand and waits for you to call on them. Or that one kid apologizes to someone without you ever prompting them. I remember one time I knew there was improvement. Started to call out and then went, "Oh, sorry." When an eloper stays in your class. When that one student that keeps forgetting to put her name on the paper finally remembers. When that one student finally turns in an assignment and it's completed. When that one student that will not ask for help says, "Excuse me, will you please help me?" When the really quiet kid raises their hand, wants to share. All of those are huge. Remember that behavior grows in millimeters. It doesn't grow kilometers and miles. Celebrate the wins when you get them. In 27 years of teaching, I have to remind myself to look for those small wins.
