Is AI Productivity a Trap? 81,000 Workers Surveyed | The Median Brief #4

The faster AI makes workers, the more they fear losing their jobs. That's the takeaway from Anthropic's new study of 81,000 Claude users, which found a near-linear link between AI exposure and job anxiety — for every 10-point rise in how much of a job Claude handles, perceived job threat climbs 1.3 points. Workers in the top quartile of exposure mention displacement worries three times as often as those in the bottom. Software engineers are more worried than elementary school teachers. Early-career workers are more worried than veterans. And 10% report their employers have simply responded to the efficiency gains by demanding more work. In this week's news: DeepSeek released its open-source V4 model series with a one-million-token context window, offering both V4-Pro and V4-Flash on Hugging Face. OpenAI shipped two models in one week — GPT-5.5 for more autonomous multi-step work, and ChatGPT Images 2.0 for text-heavy infographics and multilingual typography. And the World Economic Forum released a readiness framework warning governments that without evidence-based planning, public-sector agentic AI pilots will misallocate money, undermine trust, and fail to scale.
