Inside the Transactional #Law Competition

My name is Louisa and I'm vice president of the emerging companies and venture capital society. It's negotiation day of our fifth annual transactional law competition. The competition offers a really unique blend of professional feedback, practical experience, and exposure to corporate practice. So over the past few weeks, students have been working in pairs to analyze a hypothetical acquisition. They've drafted short term sheets, redlinined their opposing team's term sheet, and now today they're participating in a live negotiation in front of judges from top firms. So, I think what I really hope that participants gain from this experience is the opportunity to gain some hands-on corporate drafting experience. I think this competition fills a really great niche and it offers students that chance to kind of go forward and really take the lead with their transactional work experience. It's also really great prep for the summer. A lot of students at UVA law ultimately participate in summer associate programs which often involve live negotiations and negotiation work. This year we had record numbers of participants and we are so proud of this year's award winners and all of our participants.
