Full Transcript
Welcome to CEX Construction Engineering. Today we are going to do ground beam construction and why we use it in building foundation. Before we start construction, let's get some explanation of ground beam. In civil engineering, ground beam is a reinforced concrete beam constructed at or below ground level that connects columns or walls to provide support and maintain alignment. It is used to distribute loads evenly, reduce differential settlement and tie structural elements together, especially in cases where the soil has low bearing capacity or when wallsy columns are spaced apart. Let's move to site. Note this foundation depth is 1.2 m to the natural ground level NGL. The earth surrounding the foundation was removed so that everything will be seen clearly. Original Description
Here is the Ultimate Construction Guide for Civil Engineers, Student and Builders.
Unlock the secrets to ground beam construction with this in-depth tutorial designed for civil engineering students, site engineers, and construction professionals. Ground beams are vital structural elements in modern building foundations, providing a stable link between pad foundations or piles and ensuring even load distribution across weak or variable soils.
Why Use Ground Beams?
Superior Foundation Stability: Ground beams connect isolated footings, preventing differential settlement and enhancing the building’s overall strength.
Adaptability: Ideal for challenging ground conditions, high groundwater tables, or expansive soils where traditional strip footings may fail.
Accurate Load Transfer: Ensures precise bearing levels for the superstructure, supporting columns and walls with reinforced concrete strength.
How to Construct Ground Beams Correctly
Site Preparation: Excavate trenches along the beam layout, ensuring proper depth and alignment according to structural drawings.
Reinforcement Placement: Accurately position steel rebar cages, maintaining correct spacing and cover as per design specifications for maximum durability.
Formwork Installation: Erect sturdy formwork to shape the beam and support the concrete during pouring.
Concrete Pouring & Compaction: Use high-quality concrete mix, pour evenly, and compact thoroughly to eliminate voids.
Curing & Quality Checks: Properly cure the beam to achieve optimal strength, and conduct inspections for alignment, dimensions, and reinforcement placement.
