Fomalhout animation
About this lesson
This animated video shows the sequence of events that created the dust cloud around Fomalhout (top left in video) that the Hubble Space Telescope captured in 2023. The violent collision of two massive objects, unlike anything in our own present-day solar system, produced a huge debris cloud that initially resembled an exoplanet because it reflected light from Fomalhaut. Starlight eventually pushed the dust cloud away from the star.
