FM (Frequency Modulation) synthesis creates sound by using one oscillator (called a modulator) to rapidly change the frequency of another oscillator (called a carrier). Instead of just playing a simple waveform, this modulation produces complex, harmonically rich timbres. By adjusting the ratio between the modulator and carrier frequencies, and the amount of modulation (called the "index"), you can create everything from bright electric pianos and bells to metallic, evolving textures. FM synthesis is especially good at producing sounds that are hard to achieve with traditional subtractive synthesis — glassy, crystalline, and percussive tones in particular. Yamaha Reface DX is a compact, portable FM synthesizer inspired by Yamaha's classic DX7. It has a 4-operator FM engine with 12 algorithms, 8-voice polyphony, and — unlike older DX synths — feedback on all four operators, which allows for a wider range of timbres despite having fewer operators than the original. It features a multi-touch slider panel for real-time sound shaping (an improvement over the DX7's infamous menu-diving), two effects blocks with seven effect types each, 32 patch memory slots, and a built-in phrase looper. It has 37 mini keys, built-in speakers, runs on AA batteries, and weighs under 2 kg — making it genuinely portable.
