Code switching has a cost even when it works. You're not just doing your job. You're monitoring your language, your tone, your body, your humor; running a constant background calculation about what's safe to say. That's a tax, not strategy. It's paid in cognitive load, identity, exhaustion, and the loneliness of being seen as someone you present to be palatable. As a Black woman, I've lived this my entire career. I don't just meet expectations. I exceed them. Every single time. That constant need to exceed just to be seen as equal is the toll of operating in systems that weren't designed for you.
