Explains the difference between coaching and therapy in mental health contexts

Full Transcript

Coaching [music] and therapy are drastically different, and here is how. See, therapy, uh psychiatry, psychology, they are models of helping people who have been pathologized, which means that they may have some sort of disorder, some sort of >> [music] >> uh mental challenge that they've been diagnosed with. And I think there's absolutely space for that, and there are many people who need that. Now, coaching on the other hand, is a modality that is for an everyday person. So, you could be anyone in the world. You might need help with your goals, your dreams, your hopes, your aspirations, the things that are holding you back, your beliefs, your limitations, your self-sabotaging behavior. Coaching can help you with all of that. And it is different because it is centered in empowering the person that you're coaching. You are not an expert as a coach. You are someone who has learned models, methodologies, pattern recognition, and you're helping people see the error in their own ways or areas where they need to grow and improve, and how they can have a better relationship with themselves, and how they can make decisions and choices that are going to [music] change their life. So, if you are someone who wants to become a successful coach, you have to learn how to help people competently in a way that will empower them, rather than diagnosing them with anything. There is nothing wrong. That's the first and foremost assumption of all successful coaches. Our client has nothing wrong. We just want to help them in the way they need it to be helped.

Original Description

A question we get asked all the time. 𝙒𝙝𝙖𝙩 𝙞𝙨 𝙩𝙝𝙚 𝙙𝙞𝙛𝙛𝙚𝙧𝙚𝙣𝙘𝙚 𝙗𝙚𝙩𝙬𝙚𝙚𝙣 𝙘𝙤𝙖𝙘𝙝𝙞𝙣𝙜 𝙖𝙣𝙙 𝙩𝙝𝙚𝙧𝙖𝙥𝙮? Here is the simplest way to understand it. Therapy is designed for people who have been diagnosed with a disorder or a mental health challenge. It is incredibly important work and there are many people who need it. 𝗖𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗲𝘃𝗲𝗿𝘆𝗼𝗻𝗲 𝗲𝗹𝘀𝗲. For the person who is completely functional, showing up every day, doing all the right things, and still feeling like something is missing. For the person who has goals they cannot seem to reach, beliefs that keep getting in the way, patterns they cannot seem to break. 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗴𝗻𝗼𝘀𝗲. 𝗔 𝗰𝗼𝗮𝗰𝗵 𝗱𝗼𝗲𝘀 𝗻𝗼𝘁 𝗳𝗶𝘅. A coach starts from the assumption that there is nothing wrong with you. And works from there. 💛 #lifecoaching #personalgrowth #motivation #mindset #inspiration
