Claude Code Auto Dream update is insane. You've been using Claude Code wrong this whole time. Not because you're doing something bad, cuz the tool itself had a serious flaw. Nobody was talking about it. Every session you ran, Claude was quietly forgetting things, making the same mistakes, losing context you already gave it. You'd fix something, explain your preferences, correct an error, and then three sessions later, it was like it never happened. That was the real problem, and Anthropic just quietly fixed it. The digital avatar of Julian Goldie, and in this video, I'm going to break down Claude Code's new Auto Dream feature, what it actually does, why it matters, how to check if you already have it, and what's coming next. Cuz there is a lot more under the hood than most people realize. Stick around because what I'm about to show you changes how Claude Code works at a fundamental level. To start with the actual problem. When you use Claude Code, it takes notes. It's the Auto Memory feature. Each session, it saves things like your coding preferences, build commands, architecture decisions, corrections you made, really useful stuff. The idea is that Claude builds up knowledge about your project over time, so it doesn't have to start from scratch every single session. That sounds great in theory. Here's what actually happens. You use Claude Code for a few weeks, 20, 30, 50 sessions, and the memory files start piling up. Contradictions, stale notes, relative dates that stopped making sense weeks ago, debugging notes about files that got deleted in a refactor. Memory that was supposed to help Claude remember you is now actively confusing it. This is a real problem that gets worse the longer you use the tool. The fix is called Auto Dream. Anthropic quietly shipped this feature without any official announcement. Developers discovered it by looking at the Claude Code memory menu and seeing a toggle labeled Auto Dream off. That's how low-key this rollout has been. No blog post, no press release, just there, sitting in the product. So, what is Auto Dream? Name is not an accident. Anthropic explicitly modeled this after how the human brain consolidates memories during REM sleep. During the day, your brain takes in information and stores it as short-term memories. Night, while you dream, your brain replays the day, strengthens what matters, and prunes what doesn't. People who don't get enough REM sleep struggle to retain information long-term. The information comes in, but it never gets properly organized. Auto Memory is Claude's daytime brain. It takes notes as it works. Auto Dream is the REM sleep cycle. Runs between sessions in the background and cleans everything up. Here is exactly what it does when it runs. Phase one, scans your memory directory and reads the memory.md index file. Builds a complete map of everything currently stored. What exists, how it's organized, what the baseline looks like. It does this before touching anything. Phase two, goes through your recent session transcripts. These are stored locally as JSONL files. Doesn't read them all cover to cover because that would be wasteful and slow. Instead, it searches for specific high-value signals, moments where you corrected Claude, times you said, "Remember this," or, "No, that's wrong." Recurring themes that came up across multiple sessions, important decisions like architecture choices or tool changes. Phase three, this is where the real work happens. Takes everything it found and consolidates it. Merges new information into existing topic files. Converts relative dates into absolute dates. "Yesterday, we decided to use Redis" becomes "On 2026-03-15, we decided to use Redis." That way, the note still makes sense 6 months from now. Deletes contradicted facts. If you switched from Express to Fastify, the old Express entry gets removed. Prunes stale memories about files that no longer exist. And it merges duplicate entries. Three different sessions all noted the same build command quirk, those become one clean entry. Phase four, updates the memory.md index file so everything is current and accurate. The index is kept under 200 lines because that's what loads at the start of every session. Being clean, actually useful. One developer reported that Auto Dream consolidated 913 sessions worth of memory in about 8 to 9 minutes. And it runs entirely in the background. You don't have to stop working for it to run. There's also a safety boundary built in. During a dream cycle, Claude can only write to memory files. Cannot touch your source code. Cannot modify your configuration. Cannot touch your tests or project files. That's a hard limit. So, you don't have to worry about it changing things it shouldn't. Here's the thing. When I first started going deep into Claude Code, I was genuinely overwhelmed. There were so many settings, so many features, so much happening under the hood that I didn't fully understand. That's when I created AI Profit Boardroom. Over 2,000 members all focused on learning AI together and sharing what actually works. Taught me which workflows save time versus which ones wasted. The community shares real use cases and practical implementations. If you're serious about using AI to improve your work and skills, check it out. Link in description. Let me tell you how to check if you have Auto Dream right now. Open any Claude Code session. Type memory and hit enter. Look at the selector that comes up. If you see Auto Dream on in there, you already have it and it's running. If you see Auto Dream off, you have the feature, but it's toggled off. Turn it on. If you don't see any mention of Auto Dream at all, your account hasn't received it yet. It's still in gradual rollout controlled by a server-side feature flag. Anthropic manages when you get access. Can't force it from your end. Here's the workaround if you don't have it yet. You can trigger the consolidation Just tell Claude directly inside a session, "Consolidate my memory files," or "Run a dream cycle on my memory." Claude understands what you mean and will do it on demand. There's also a dream {slash} command, though some users report getting an unknown skill error, depending on their rollout status. Manual instruction method works consistently regardless. Important thing to note before you enable this, back up your memory directory first. Memory files live at the each Claude projects folder on your machine as plain markdown files. Copy that folder somewhere safe before your first Auto Dream run. Feature prunes aggressively, and right now there's no built-in undo. If it removes something you wanted to keep, a backup gives you a way to recover it. Also, the current version doesn't have detailed logs. The only indication it ran is a timestamp showing "Last ran X seconds ago" in the memory menu. There's no change log of exactly what it changed, created, or removed. That's a real limitation, and there's already a GitHub issue filed about it requesting better transparency. This is clearly a feature that's still evolving. The core functionality works. Let me give you the full picture of how Claude Code's memory system works, because there are actually four layers and they work together. Layer one is Claude.md, file you write yourself. Explicit instructions, coding standards, architecture decisions. Claude reads it at the start of every session. Layer two is Auto Memory, Claude's daytime brain. It writes its own notes during sessions based on your corrections and patterns. You don't write it, Claude does. Layer three is session memory, standard context window. Handles continuity within a single session, but doesn't persist after. Layer four is Auto Dream, the consolidation layer. Keeps everything else clean, current, and accurate over time. Use all four together and Claude Code's memory actually holds up long-term. Here's something that's a bit wild. The reason so many developers know about Auto Dream and about what's really going on under the hood of Claude Code is because of a massive accidental leak. Claude Code version 2.188 was published with a missing line in a config file, specifically a missing entry in .mpignore that should have excluded source map files. Because of that oversight, the published package included a file called kelaiges.map, which contained every original TypeScript source file of the entire Claude Code codebase, all 512,000 lines of it. Security researchers spotted this at around 4:23 in the morning and posted about it. Tweet got over 21 million views. What developers found when they dug through it was genuinely surprising. There's a feature called Kairos, referenced over 150 times in the source, which is an unreleased autonomous mode where Claude operates as a persistent, always-on background agent. Receives periodic prompts to decide whether to act proactively, maintains its own daily logs, and even subscribes to GitHub webhooks. Kairos includes Auto Dream as part of its design. There's also Ultra Plan, which offloads complex planning to a remote cloud session running Opus 4.6 with up to 30 minutes of dedicated think time. There's a full Tamagotchi-style companion pet system called Buddy, complete with species rarity, shiny variants, and a soul description written by Claude when it first hatches. This is actually real. It's in the source code. There's undercover mode, which is used by Anthropic employees when Claude Code is being used on public open-source repositories. Instructs Claude not to include internal code names, internal project names, or unreleased model version numbers in commit messages or pull request descriptions. The internal model code names found in the source, capybara maps to Claude 4.6, fennec to Opus 4.6, and numb bat to an unreleased model. Main entry point of the application is a single 785 kilobyte file. Codebase uses a custom React terminal renderer, has over 40 tools, and a multi-agent orchestration system. It's not a simple CLI tool. The immediate thing that matters to you right now is Auto Dream, because you can use that today. And to summarize what you should actually do, just open Claude Code and type {dot} memory. Check if Auto Dream is available and turn it on. You can back up your current Claude projects folder before enabling it. No built-in undo if it prunes something you wanted. Third, if you don't have the toggle yet, just tell Claude to consolidate my memory files manually after long sessions. Fourth, after major project changes like framework migrations or rename modules, trigger a dream cycle immediately rather than waiting. Fifth, check your memory.md occasionally after it runs. It's plain markdown. Delete anything that looks off. Auto Dream is not a flashy announcement. Didn't come with a launch post or a feature video. But it solves one of the most real, persistent problems with using AI coding assistants over time. Memory that degrades, confuses, and works against you the longer you use the tool. This is what serious AI tooling looks like, solving the boring, unglamorous problems that actually matter when you're using this stuff every day. If you're looking to dive deeper into AI tools and actually implement them in your work, I recommend AI Profit Boardroom. Over 2,000 people learning how to use AI effectively. Everyone shares real experiences, what's working, what's not, which tools are worth your time, which ones to skip, or hype, just solid information and practical guidance from people doing the work.
