Step three, assess the problem. Here's the part that requires a little bit of courage. You have to be honest with yourself. You may actually be the problem. If there's a real gap between what's expected of you and what you're delivering, well, then you need to face that head-on and make a plan to change it. Get specific about what needs to change, what you're committing to and by when, and what support you need to make that change doable. If on the other hand, the issues feel politically motivated, the organization's changing strategy, or the competitive environment changed, well, that's not really a problem you can do much about. Knowing which problem you have on your hands, well, that's the fork in the road.

Original Description

When your job feels at risk, the most important question isn't what your manager is doing — it's whether you're part of the problem. If there's a real gap between what's expected and what you're delivering, that's fixable — but only if you face it directly and make a specific plan to close it. If the problem is political or strategic, that's a different situation entirely. And knowing the difference changes everything.
