AI Engineers Are Getting $200K+ Base Salaries
Skills:
Staying Current in AI80%
AI startups are changing how they compete for talent. For years, the standard offer was lower salary paired with high equity, betting on long-term upside. That model is shifting. Today, many AI startups are offering significantly higher base salaries to attract and secure top engineers immediately.
Since 2022, median base salaries at VC-backed startups have risen from around $160K to $200K, with some entry-level roles reaching as high as $220K. This reflects a tighter talent market where experienced AI engineers are scarce and companies are competing aggressively for the same small pool of candidates.
At the same time, broader economic uncertainty is influencing candidate preferences. More people are prioritizing guaranteed cash compensation over equity, which may or may not pay off in the future. Startups are adapting to this shift by increasing base pay rather than relying heavily on stock options.
This trend highlights a deeper reality. AI talent remains limited, demand continues to grow, and compensation structures are evolving quickly as a result. It also explains why more people are trying to enter the field, seeing both the opportunity and the urgency created by this moment.
