Look at any AI engineer JD, APIs, microservices, queues, caching, observability, token budgets, rate limits, maybe one prompt template buried at the bottom. The actual job is software engineering. The model is an API call, but here's the gap. Companies keep filling these roles with data scientists because the title says AI. Data science is a different skill set, stats, notebooks, hypothesis testing. Important work, but not what the role describes. 99% of AI engineering is software engineering, building production systems, debugging at 2:00 a.m., making things actually scale. If you're a data scientist pushed into an AI role and drowning, you're not bad at AI. You're missing the software engineering foundation no one told you to build. If you're a back-end engineer thinking AI engineer is a different planet, it's not. You already do most of the job. Stop letting job descriptions gaslight you about the real gap.
